10TH F R E E D O M ANNIVERSARY 3 BASE A M M U N I T I O N D E P O T recently celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the granting of the Freedom of Briiggen. The celebrations, which took place over three days, commenced with a civic reception at which Major General and Mrs Whalley, Brigadier and Mrs Alvvay and members of the Unit and their wives were the guests of the citizens of the Gemeinde Briiggen. At the reception the Burgermeister of Briiggen, H e r r Peter Jansen, presented a scroll marking the 10th Anniversary to the Commandant of 3 Base Ammunition Depot, Colonel Bryan Hopkinson. In presenting the scroll, H e r r Jansen recalled the thirty year connection that the Unit has had with the com- munities of Briiggen and Bracht and spoke of the continual displays of friendship, help and mutual trust which had prompted the communities first to grant the Freedom of the City in 1973 and to formally recognise this the 10th Anniversary of that Freedom. Colonel Hopkinson in response presented the Burger- meister with a crystal decanter and Corps badge cast in brass and set in wrought iron. General and Mrs Whalley arrive at the Mehrzweckhalle. Bracht, for the Reception. which was witnessed by a large and enthusiastic audience, also comprised very polished performances by the Bracht D r u m and Fanfare Corps, Amicitior Choir, Music Club and the Liittel- bracht Folk Dancing G r o u p . T h e celebration of the Anniversary was brought to a close on the Sunday when members of the Unit and their families joined with the citizens of Briiggen in a church service with music for the service provided by the Staff Band. It was a very memorable weekend. P A C K U P Y O U R T R O U B L E S L A N C E C O R P O R A L M A C M c L U S K I E of the Stores Company Falkland Islands Logistic Battalion has just collected in the region of £1,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Fund by carrying a twenty six kilogram Bergen pack for a total of sixty days. Lance Corporal McLuskie has been in the Falklands since June and as a keep fit exercise, he carried his Bergen every- where he went. H e then decided that this would be a way of collecting money for a charitable fund. H e decided on Cystic Fibrosis because he has a brother-in-law who suffers from the disease. With publicity through the Falkland Islands Broadcasting Station, he began his effort on the 8th July with over four hundred sponsors. M a c was to be seen all over Port Stanley carrying his pack, everyone was looking out for him to ensure he was not seen without his load. H e was excused carrying it only for BFTs and when sleeping. Herr Peter Jansen, the Burgermeister (left) presents the Anniversary Scroll to Colonel Hopkinson. 10th On the last day of his carry, Commander British Forces, Major General Spacie, came to help him off with the twenty six kilogram Bergen. The Unit has long been associated with local sport. It was therefore appropriate that the celebrations included something which would recognise this, encouraging the participation of both the civil and military communities. 3 Base Ammunition Depot sponsored a twenty kilometre Families Mini-Marathon and a Six-a-Side Football Tournament. The Mini-Marathon was started by the Burgermeister and certificates were presented to all who finished the course. Prizes for the Football Tournament, which was won by T S F Bracht with 438 M C L G as runners-up, were presented by Colonel Hopkinson. T h e D G O S and the Burgermeister took the salute at a parade held to mark the Anniversary in W o r t h a m Barracks, Bracht. Music for the parade was provided by the Staff Band of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. It was with great disappointment that a planned Beating of Retreat by the Staff Band, which was to follow the parade, had to be cancelled at the last minute due to inclement weather. The Staff Band, under their Director of Music, Captain Rodney Parker, did however get their chance to show their quality at a most enjoyable Festival of Music held in the Mehrzweckhalle, Bracht that evening. T h e Festival of Music, The end of sixty days hard labour. |
