Transcription THE FREEDOM OF DULMEN
FOR the second year running an RAOC unit in BAOR has
received the Freedom of a German City. On 10th September,
members of the Forward Ordnance Depot Dulmen exercised
their new right to march through the town with swords drawn
and bayonets fixed.
The ceremony, held in the picturesque market place in
Dulmen, brought to a climax a week of Anglo German
celebrations, ranging from a military families' street party to a
football match, from formal civil receptions to Beating of
Retreat outside the Rathaus by the RAOC Staff Band and the
Pipes and Drums of the 2nd Battalion, 51 Highland Regiment
Volunteers.
To mark this unique occasion, the Director General of
Ordnance Services, Major General Whalley, presented the
Biirgermeister, Herr Schlieker, with a Sword of Honour, a
portrait of HM The Queen, and a magnificent hand carved
dining table made of solid oak with two matching armchairs,
embossed with a gold crest of the Corps. The table and chairs
were hand made entirely by craftsmen employed in the Depot.
The honour bestowed on the Forward Ordnance Depot
highlights the close affinity between the people of Dulmen and
the Corps. The Freedom has resulted in the cementing of the
excellent relations and sincere friendship which clearly exist
between the two communities.
