Headquarters BAOR
OUR main news this month was of the visit to
BAOR of Major General Whalley. The DGOS
and Mrs Whalley visited BAOR from 2nd to 11th
September to visit units in the Base area and to
participate in Freedom ceremonies at 3 BAD
and Forward Ordnance Depot Dulmen.
The DGOS's visit coincided with a tour of
BAOR by the RAOC Staff Band and the oppor-
tunity was taken to stage the ceremony of
Beating Retreat on the forecourt of Joint Head-
quarters, Rheindahlen on Monday 5th September.
After a
miserably wet and blowy weekend the skies brightened on
Monday morning and by 6.15 pm bright evening sunshine en-
hanced a naturally impressive setting. Some three hundred
guests and their hosts witnessed a display by the Staff Band
which was immaculate in both musical and military terms.
The Beating Retreat ceremony was followed by a Reception
in the Rheindahlen Rooms hosted by Commander Supply
BAOR and Mrs Alway. It was a friendly and informal function
enjoyed by guests and hosts alike.
Sunday the 9th saw many members of the Garrison enjoying
the scenery around Rheindahlen courtesy of the Deutschen
Unteroffiziere of Headquarters NORTHAG, in conjunction with
the I W , on the 9th Intemationaler Volksmarsch. There was a
choice of two routes, the first was ten kilometres, the second
was twenty kilometres. It was quite a family occasion with
many children showing their parents the way round the course!
Among those seen at the various checking in halts were WOl
Les Jones, W02 Brian Davies and Staff Sergeant Graham Busby
all accompanied by families and all receiving their respective
medals for completing the March!
News now of Cross Country running. Supply Directorate
raised a team for this Wednesday afternoon sport and after their
first run declared themselves content with their finishing positions
and look forward to doing it again! Let's hope we hear more
as the season progresses.
Now news of the Supply Directorate Football Pontoon.
The start of the English football season saw the start of our
Pontoons designed to raise money towards the costs of the
Directorate Christmas party. Pontoon No. I was won jointly
by Captain Steve Owen and Sergeant Mark Batty but the booby
prize winners were really too numerous to mention! We will
keep you all informed on the results of subsequent Pontoons.
The OLPEC Cor Officers Long Petroleum Course to you) en-
joyed another successful visit to BAOR recently and seemed
to have leamt a lot about petroleum as well as about ' Pils.'
Another successful Accommodation Services seminar was held
in the Garrison recently. In the quiet and comfortable surround-
ings of ' E ' Mess, Rheindahlen's premier mess, much informa-
tion of interest was exchanged. Major Peter Hewlett (Retd) will
appear shortly in ' The Noble Spaniard,' as Mr Justice Proud-
foot. After his recent weight losses he will be a thinner justice
than hitherto and by the time the pantomime season comes round
(only six weeks away dear reader!) he will have to use a few
cushions to restore his former jovial appearance. Major Roy
Southworth is busily practicing his American accent for a
trip to the South, he has resumed his pidgeon shooting activities
around the Garrison to deadly effect.
Lieutenant Colonel John Shircliff (Retd) recently completed
a six day course—on German wines which included tasting one
hundred and sixty eight different wines—but don't all rush,
it's not in the Course 'Programme, he had to take leave and
pay for the course!
Farewell to W02 Roger Jagger who has left on promotion
to WOl. In his place is W02 Joe Emery who joined us from
down in the American zone. Also on arrivals and departures
this month, we must say goodbye and good luck to Mrs Brenda
The Corps Band Beats Retreat at Headquarters BAOR.
Frizell, who left us after a short stay, her husband left Germany
to be the RSM of the Pay Corps Depot! In to replace Brenda,
all the way from Labour Resource around the corner from
Supply, came Mrs Tania Riley, we hope you all enjoy your
stay. Another arrival this month for Lance Corporal Graham
and Kathy Donohue a son James Paul, congratulations! Also
on arrivals, for Corporal Steve and Susan Ronaldson a son
Philip Andrew, congratulations to you all.
SHAPE
THERE has been much arriving and departing
at SHAPE recently. Lieutenant Colonel Seddon
has left us for Nigeria to be replaced by Lieu-
tenant Colonel Eddison from LE(A) Andover
(who becomes our senior RAOC officer at
SHAPE). Two of our more senior staff clerks
have left for civilian life—WOsl Tony
Moreman and Rick Williams. Our best wishes
to them both in their second careers. They
have been replaced by WOsl Barry Quigley and
Geoff Garratt respectively (both from Rhein-
dahlen!). WOl Garratt was seen one evening shortly after his
arrival running around Casteau sprinkling flour on the ground.
Apparently he used to do it in Rheindahlen—and he left there
on promotion, so it could catch on!
Another new arrival is Sophie Roche, a daughter for W02
Bill and Debbie Roche. Our congratulations to Bill and Debbie,
and a welcome to Sophie—I haven't decided who she is to
replace yet!
On the sporting front, thoughts are turning to rugby, soccer
(we can't call it football here) and squash. W02 Roger Evans
has already had his rugby players out and they have produced
their first casualty of the season. WOl Mick Gallagher and
Sergeants Gary Sumner and Bill Hopkins have been spotted on
the squash courts at 0700 hrs—what can three people do on one
squash court at that time in the morning?
