Headquarters Allied Forces Northern Europe THERE has been plenty to celebrate recently. Sergeant Paul Harrison learned that he is on the 83/84 promotion board for Staff. Sergeants John Clorlcy and Kcvan Golby received their substantive rank and postings to LE(A) and MOD(DMO) respectively. On 1st August Mrs Val Smith introduced a bouncing baby son, Andrew, into the world, much to the delight of husband Staff Sergeant Steve Smith arid daughter Andrea. Sergeants John Clorlcy and Paul Harrison obtained distinction passes in EPC(A) Communication Skills. On the sporting side Sergeant Paul Harrison has completed three marathons (twenty six miles) each in under three hours. Some of his enthusiasm rubbed off onto Sergeant John Clorlcy who recently completed his first half marathon (thirteen miles). Sergeant Kcvan Golby celebrated his last week in Norway by helping the Headquarters second football team to win their last game of the season and promotion too. We must not forget Sergeant Steve Jarzcmbski who we believe still works here between temporary duty visits to other NATO Headquarters. A fond farewell is bid to Corporal Tony Donaldson, Sergeants Kevan Golby and John Clorlcy and their families, and we welcome aboard Corporal Kim Sonncx, his wife Marian and son Steven. Ordnance Depot Antwerp A busy month for Ordnance Depot Antwerp. The CO Lieutenant Colonel Freddie Grant became ' bait' for one of our Guard Dogs at the Annual Garrison fete. Having been given the treat- ment he was then able to see similar punishment dished out lo Mrs Clarke. There is no truth in the subsequent rumour that the dog that bit the CO got food poisoning. Corporal Eddie Bird led the Brocchcm Bombers Motor Cycle display team in an exciting display that culminated in six of the team balancing on a BSA motor cycle. The crowd loved it and it is hoped that next year they can get a few more team members to enhance their rather meagre squad. Needless to say without the help of Depot Services, ably controlled by Mr Peter Sutherland, the fete would not be the success that it was. Who else in Emblem can build stalls, hang up flags and erect fencing so quickly? Hot on the heels of the Garrison Fete came the Four Nations tournament. This annual event is a series of com- petitions between UK, Belgium, Holland and Germany. This year it was hosted in Holland by the Luftwaffe. As is tradition ODA deliberately came last. At least that's their excuse (used annually). On a more sombre note Ordnance Depot Antwerp provided the Guard of Honour and wreath bearers at the Annual Antwerp Liberation Parade. The weather was so bad that the honour guard got stood down from the parade. This was a pity after Corporal Taff Crocker had drilled them to perfection. The next day Lance Corporals Stewart and Preston repeated their wreath bearing process at the British Legion Cromwell Tank remem- brance service. They carried the wreaths for Commander British Forces Antwerp Colonel Harding, on what was to be his last official duty before returning to UK. As we bid goodbye to Colonel Harding it's welcome to Colonel Hyles, we hope you and your family have a pleasant tour in Antwerp. 3 Base Ammunition Depot AT the start of September we were all busy involved with the celebrations of the 10th Anniversary of the granting of the Freedom of Briiggen and this is covered in a separate article on page 202. Despite all the organising and re- hearsals connected with the Anniversary Parade the unit still found time to carry out its role and send representatives to the RAOC BAOR Shoot. The team placings being SMG fourth, SLR third, LMG third, Pistol third with Corporal King becoming Corps champion at the SMG. The individual placings on all weapons was Staff Sergeant Williams fifth, Corporal King seventh, Lance Corporal Ebsworth eleventh and RSM Roberts fourteenth; with the team finishing third. The CAO and Major Simpson can be seen running around the perimeter fence, perhaps in preparation for the next fun run. Meanwhile, the winter sportsmen arc out training with their respective shaped and sized balls. Tlic mini-bus recently took a trip to a rock concert at Dortmund. If anybody wants to know how much the taxi fare is from Dortmund to Bracht, Private Miller will let you know! Congratulations go to Lance Corporal Smyth, Corporal Elliot and Lance Corporal Murphy on promotion, to Lance Corporal Pcttil and Kacla Gavaghan on their marriage and to Corporal and Mrs Wcissgcrbcr on the birth of a daughter. Farewells this month arc WO I Alan Whitclcggc, Sergeant Gavaghan (to civvy street). Staff Sergeant Holvcy and Sergeant Salt for their last six months in UK with Sergeant McLclland, Corporal Vernon posted. All 3 BAD wish them and their families all the best in the future. Welcome to Bracht Captain Hargrcavcs, WOI Walker, Sergeants Tapper and Norris, Lance Corporal Fidcle, Private Anderson and Staff Sergeant Jolly, we hope they and their families have a pleasant tour at 3 BAD. 15 Ordnance Group HEADQUARTERS THE Headquarters sponsored the visit of the 2/51 Highland Volunteers who, after training in the Soltau area for ten days, descended on Dulmcn to participate in Exercise Steadfast Resistance (Screenplay by Major Ian Marshall and Captain Ron Ball). The scenario seemed to consist of WOI Steve Myers running through the woods in the middle of the night wakening up angry Scottish soldiers. Not the most healthy of pursuits, he reported afterwards. In the meantime, back in Dulmcn, Major Mike Knight sat astonished at the ability of Captain Ball to fall asleep at the blink of an eye. The exercise directors consisted of WOI Frank Rogers/W02 Bob Bosvrah (Days) and WOI Brian VVicks/W02 Joe Hoareau (Nights). Military and Civilian personnel alike attended the ceremony which saw the ' Freedom of Dulmcn' presented to the Forward Ordnance Depot and accepted on their behalf by the DGOS. On 12th September Mrs Marshall presented her husband with a six pound six ounce baby girl, Charlotte Lucy, at BMH Munstcr. We wish them all well and offer our congratulations. Mrs Anne Taunton has deserted us as Secretary of Tower School and we've welcomed Mrs Jane George in her place. PS. Just in case the Forward Ordnance Depot doesn't report it WOI Kelly Adamson led the Sergeants Mess Cricket Team to an easy victory over the Officers Mess who fielded seventeen batsmen! 154 FORWARD AMMUNITION DEPOT IT has certainly been a barbequc and cricket summer; it is a pity that the cricket itself did not become heated—the pavilion tried to one day and started to emit smoke! The season cul- minated in the Lane Cup being won by W02 Taff Davies—he prophesied that he would, the skills of Corporal Dave Tressler, CSM John Stone, Sergeant Pud Ambler, Captain Andrew Whitclcy, Sergeant Spud Murphy and Corporal Max Bonsu were not enough to stop him. Coinciding with the Freedom of Dulmcn celebrations, we had a morning visit from Major General and Mrs Whalley. Recklinghausen gave the DGOS the opportunity to see some of their varied types of vehicles. He then travelled to Muna Camp where, amongst other things, he cut the tape to declare open the Station Corporals Mess. Corporal John Anderson served the first drinks and together with Corporals John Crosby, Phil Andrews, Derek Adamson and Andy Carrington, also Lance Corporals Brian Murdoch and Paul Chisholm, they all intend to start it off in the manner in which they wish it to continue. I am sure that their main aim is to emulate the Sergeants Mess. Good luck to them. The whole Station extend heartfelt sympathy to Staff Sergeant and Mrs Maskell at the tragic death of their son in a road traffic accident. Sergeant Dawn Lewis was pleased, after all, that she went on the NBC Course; she came back with an 'A' grade. Sergeant and Mrs Paul McGrath increased the establishment by one son, Paul, and then immediately took themselves and the family off to Ludgershall. Lance Corporal and Mrs Neil Graham are remaining behind with their new daughter Danielle. Marriage is in the air this month, Private Decca Metcalfe married a local girl Deborah Morgan and a within the Unit one involved Lance Corporal Brian Murdoch and Private Joyce Meek, then an inter-Unit one between Corporals Teresa Nelhams and Gary O'Hara, who used to be here. — 228 — |
