Transcription The postings-out seem to outnumber the postings-in by
about 2:1 this month. The former include W02 Taff Davies
(Brunei). Sergeant Pud Ambler (Devizes), Staff Sergeant Scobie
Kirtley (Devizes), Sergeant Martin Winter (Brighton), Corporal
Laiffe Jameson (Kineton), Corporal Mick Cuthbert (Kineton),
Corporal Dave Tressler (Devizes) and Private Brian Bumham
(Worthy Down).
Those joining us are WOl Andy Brown, Staff Sergeant Fred
Haddock. Sergeants Vince Haley, Peter Potter and Dave
O'Loughlin.
FORWARD
VEHICLE DEPOT
RECKLINGHAUSEN
THIS month started with the annual unit Barbeque. Many
thanks go to the organisers, Sergeant Taff Lovejoy and all his
helpers for all their efforts. The only sad note was when
Captain Warwick Stanton's volleyball team lost to the Work-
shop civilians in the final, obviously a political move to maintain
good relationships. Our ACC Corporal. Les Penaluna deserves
a sympathetic mention. He arrived in the unit only a week
previously and had to prepare over two hundred and fifty
B-B-Q meals!.
Corporal W h i t e puts an EKA recovery vehicle through its paces
during the visit of the DCOS to Recklinghausen.
Corporal Max
Bonsu enjoys the Recklinghausen
Barbeque.
We seem to be ' winning ' with all the issues we are now
making, although from the comments made by Sergeant Les Law
in the VCC and Sergeant Pete Gee in R and I when asked
" How's it going?" we do wonder. One of our unsung depart-
ments is the Workshop Stores Section manned by Sergeant
Ross Clark. Corporals Fletch Fletcher and Mark Wilson who
beaver away quietly to keep the workshop supplied and so
prevent any problems during the issues season.
The DGOS paid us a visit recently and during the days
activities he watched the Vehicle Specialists in action. Corporal
Chalky White put an EKA to good use in recovering a Bedford
from our static water tank. Sergeant Wyn Davies had organised
a skilled driving stand for Land Rovers and trailers while
our ASM Colin Payne was practising soldiers for their Part I
Motorcycle Driving Test. We were delighted when General
Whallcy had a go and showed his considerable experience on a
motorbike. At the end of the visit he and Colonel Carruthers
were presented with certificates by our Depot Superintendent
WOl Roy Davis electing them as honorary Vehicle Specialists
for their days efforts.
On the sporting front our fishermen Privates Mark Downey
and Dick Wittington have just competed in the Super 6 Fish-
ing Competition in BAOR. No luck this year but they have
promised if they can have every Wednesday afternoon off from
now until next year to practice they should do better. Wulfen
Station has just finished its squash competition and we provided
both finalists when Corporal Max Bonsu beat Private Chippy
Carpenter in a closely contested final.
We bid farewell to Sergeant Alan Stephens, Lance Corporal
Scouse Powell and Private Murph Murphy on posting and wel-
come Corporal Tony Clarke, Lance Corporal Phil Busby and
Private Taff Rees.
SUPPLY DEPOT VIERSEN
OUR dinghy sailors dominate the scene again this month,
having fought their way to the finals of the Rhine Area Cotn-
— 229
petition. However, on the day 14 Topo RE were just that little
more experienced. We now qualify for the BAOR competition
which will be held at the Mohnezee at the end of the month.
The number of sailors in the unit has swelled to seven all of
whom are rapidly gaining experience. Look out next year!
RAOC Viersen (ably represented by us) entered two teams
for the RAOC Inter-Unit Regatta, coming fifth and seventh.
Our representatives were: WOl Terry Stroud. W02 Andy
Brathwaite and Sergeant Alan Riches, Corporal Dean Mc-
Carthy and Lance Corporal Garry Westmoreland.
The hockey season has started with a vengeance. After the
two day long hockey meeting in Rheindahlen our gallant team
could be seen hobbling around looking decidedly stiff! The
same old names (Andy Brathwaite, Alan Riches), joined by a
new one—Major Tom Greenwood, the new OC, reputed to be a
goalie. However, having seen his athletic performance in a
practice, he is unlikely to be allowed to stay in goal this season!
Our fishermen: Staff Sergeants Ray Burden, Dave Jones
and Corporal Barry Stephensdn, have been entering local
competitions but have not yet appeared with many fishy stories
(or much fish!).
We bade farewell to one of the longest serving civilian mem-
bers of the unit recently. Frau Brodowski retires after almost
thirty years service with the British Army, the large majority
of it having been spent with this Depot. The party went with
a swing, finally winding up some six hours after it started.
Goodbye and good luck Irmgard, we will miss you.
And last but not least, our Summer Ball which went off
with its usual efficiency thanks to Sergeant Dennis Williamson,
Corporals Nigel Eames and Barry Stephenson (plus of course
our barmaids and waitresses).
FORWARD ORDNANCE DEPOT DULMEN
REGIMENTAL
WING. The unit managed to hold an end-of-
season cricket match between the Officers and Sergeants Mess.
The Sergeants Mess scraped home with a win!
Sergeant John Bateman won most of the prizes in our twice
yearly ' Dulmen Dash ' and in addition was awarded the Fitness
Training Officers Award for Fitness achievement.
Sadly this month we say farewell to Major and Mrs Cantor
and mention a special thank you to Mrs Cantor for successfully
running the unit library for almost three years. We all wish
them well upon retirement in the York area. We also say
farewell to W02 John Waite and wish him well upon his retire-
ment from the Army. We welcome Staff Sergeant Jim Milne
RAPC into the Unit Pay Office.
CDP 2. This month sees us saying farewell to several of our
staff. Sergeant Phil Walls is going to Belize for six months
whilst Privates Brian Taylor and Nobsie Nobbs are both posted
nearer home, to Dortmund. With our numbers dwindling WOl
' Smudge ' Smith can count Military Staff on one hand. Things
may get better.
The sound of people leaving CDP is echoed by Sergeant
Tony Griffiths and Corporal Ron Gant who are patiently await-
ing posting orders, whilst Lance Corporal Jock Cawley really en-
joys being ' Deputy' in his capacity of CDPs Arms Storeman.
