1st- British Corps HEADQUARTERS RAOC A Jk SUMMER LEAVE has now ended and all person- M^L nel are uncovering the ' I n trays' and beavering ^f ^ ^ hard to clear their work in preparation for the ^^^^^k forthcoming winter season of exercises. Brigadier ^Hl^F Paviour attended the Freedom of Dulmen parade ^ B ^m and also the Nieheim celebrations before departing ^M to UK for a DGOS Conference. ^m On the sporting front our Coe Cup team were triumphant in winning the Coe Cup tennis trophy beating Headquarters Artillery Division in the final, our team members were Brigadier Paviour, Brigadier Tyler (Comd Maint), Major Baines, Captain McCarthy (Maint), Captain Lane (ADC), WOl Kelly, W02 Wallis and Sergeant Child. Well done! In the five-a-side football our team were narrowly beaten in the semi-final of the plate competition but were extremely success- ful in getting so far in this event, our team consisted of the following: Captain Recce-Russell (Med),WOl Kelly,W02 Wallis, Corporals Deakin and Jones (Comms) and Lance Corporal Haywood. With the summer Coe Cup Competition now over we look forward to the winter session. G3 (TRAINING I EPS) are just about getting back together after the summer leave period. Our resident joint Army Postal Chess Champion (for the third time) WOl John Regan is still awaiting news of his posting back to reality in England. W02 Pete Harrison is currently on local leave having just handed over as PEC of the Sergeants Mess (he needs the leave to recover from it!). Corporal Dave Henley is constantly walking round the branch mumbling 'Posting' (August 1984, Records take note). Private Mick Tomkins is trying to borrow a No. 1 dress uniform for some big occasion in his life next year (truth is he can't afford a new suit). Private Chris Owens' leg has just about healed in time for the BFT (provided he gets back off the ski slopes of Austria in one piece!) Now the girls: Corporal Jenny Campbell is trying hard to get the EPS officers to do it her way, but fight- ing a losing battle, Lance Corporal Katrina Bartle has a new male in her life, ' Digby D o g ' (sorry Pete!) and Private Sue Semmens has announced that she is taking the plunge into marriage next year, congratulations to Sue and Lance Corporal Kevin Haywood (of Falklands fame). Finally congratulations go to W02 Pete and Marion Harrison on the birth of their son, Gareth. As for the rest of the Headquarters, our congratulations to John Thomson who was finally promoted to WOl and on the same day received notification that he had been accepted for a commission in the RAMC. He then decided to do his own research into medical matters by tearing his ligaments obtaining a wheelchair and carrying on with a one hundred kilometre charity run to see how soon his hands would blister. Also participating in this run were Staff Sergeant Dave Flinn and Private Andy Woollatt. Other promotions within the Head- quarters are Eric Robinson to sub-W02 and Alan Dance and Chris Johnson to Lance Corporal—well deserved. Welcome back to suntanned Keith Tomlinson after his six months as a guest of the British Embassy in Lebanon and many congratulations to him on his marriage to Sergeant Carol Hardy. Finally, we say farewell to Private Phillip Hoyle on posting. 1 Ordnance Battalion HEADQUARTERS DEAR Problem Page,—Having foolishly taken a few days leave I returned to find that I had missed the drinks for the acting promotion of Corporal John Menzies and Lance Corporal Chris Gaffney—are they after my job? Dear Dehydrated,—Since you are unlikely to go on leave for another year <SJpii§| v —joe£5I|? your job is safe. i&^z^ilSi*^^ Dear Problem Page,—Please help me as I think I have a personal problem. Major Ted Walcroft the S02 Mat, Staff Sergeants Charlie Salmon and Bob Maxwell, and Jo-Ann our hard working filing and despatch clerk, are all posted soon and Private Paul Johnson has already left—should I take it personally. Dear BO,—Try a Posting Preference Proforma under each arm. Dear Problem Page,—Just to thank you for your exceedingly helpful copy of Horse and Hound, forwarded to me under plain cover. I am happy to report that Lieutenant Colonel David Burden is now in safe custody of his dog and Second Lieutenant Karen Morgan is expecting the arrival of her beloved horse A ' Brownie' any day—and it's all thanks to you. Dear Animal Lover,—What can I say? Dear Problem Page,—Am I in the right line of work? Whilst Major Phil Hawkins and Major AJ Truelove revel in it all I just can't seem to get the same thrill from sleeping rough in the pouring rain, standing to in the frosty morning air, eating compo and spending seven days in an open neck shirt. Dear Delicate,—Exercise is good for you, look what it's done for Lance Corporal Tim Gore. 12 ORDNANCE COMPANY SINCE our last contribution the unit has once again been very busy. First of all the company took part in Exercise First Base, a unit exercise devised by Second Lieutenant Hazou. It entailed a platoon trying to defend an area of Achmer Training Area against other members of the company in various disguises. They were apparently successful as Achmer is still in our hands (worst luck). Yet again the unit entered a team in the 67th International Nijmegen Marches. The team members consisted of SQMS Sexton (cycle orderly), Staff Sergeants Markley and Taylor, Lance Corporal Crow, Privates Arnold, Brain, Barstow, Currell, Clegg, Hall, Marshall, Williams and Lance Corporal Brunton ACQ All received an individual medal for completing the four day event and the team received a collective medal for completing as a team. Hot on the heels (ouch) of Nijmegen came the patrol com- petition organised by Headquarters 1 Ordnance Battalion. We entered three teams led by Corporals Robbins and Milner and Lance Corporal Cherry. It came as a shock to everyone to find they had to ' t a b ' round carrying large packs. Suffice to say a great time was had by one and all. Special mention to Corporal Milner who out of all the teams he alone finished with all his men. Well done! The company is at present going through a hectic time preparing for exercises and the arrival of COFFER at the beginning of October. News of these events will be covered in the next issue, hopefully with some photographs. The following members of the company have at long last escaped. Staff Sergeant John Kwasiuk, Sergeants Steve Hope, Bob Cox and Joe Flowers, Corpora] Blue Barlow and Private Spiney Wright. We actually saw a tear in the latter's eyes at their combined farewell drinks. Congratulations to Corporals Sean Graves and Steve Irwin on their recent marriages and to the latter also on his pro- motion. Also congratulations to Private Tony Hines on his promotion to Lance Corporal. We would also like to welcome the following: Sergeants Geordie Hutchinson, Dave John, Ken Hollows and Private Lips Shipley. We hope your stay with us will be a happy and enjoyable one. Stop Press: Corporal Alan Warnett has at last departed the unit to go to UK to play with computers. 13 ORDNANCE COMPANY THE OC has been extended in post until January, his office lights burn well into the night doing all those jobs that his successor, Major Jordan, was intended to do. We have a busy time ahead of us, Munsteriager Open Day being our first hurdle, when the unit goes on show to the local population. Then our Unit PRE, followed by Exercise Mule Train, Mini Mule III, Exercise Vengeful Merlin, Exercise Hard Provider, two NATO Forward Storage Sites guards, and then Exercise Eternal Triangle followed by eighty four separation claims applications! Our plans to move to Harden Barracks and take over from 51 Ordnance Company are ad- vancing, the Orderly Room are furiously typing reams of paper- work on our occupation, roll on the disturbance allowance. Our soccer team, led by Lance Corporal Gamble, is getting back into practice, we lost to 43 Ordnance Company last week, but beat 7 Armoured Brigade Workshop Stores Section this week! Our rugby enthusiasts are practising out of hours with 32 Armoured Engineer Regiment. Who knows we may be substituting soccer jerseys for rugby stripes soon! Privates Savoury and Jenkinson-Kenshole disappear with the surf board to the lake regularly, they run daily instruction classes to the local girls, or something like that, whilst Corporal Jukes prepares our vehicles for PRE! Welcome back Privates Young, Holland and Moseley from HM holiday camps, congratulations to Lance Corporal Rigby on his recent promotion and farewell to Lance Corporals Roberts and Hatfield and good luck on the Commando course, and also farewell to Private Ross who is off to join the penguin — 230 — |
