assisting the Hannover Scout movement, Joyce got so fed up
with him going off camping with the Scouts that she decided

DEAR Mum and Dad,—With all this sport I am playing I must
be getting fitter. There is the pre-season football training under
Staff Sergeant Jimmy James and Sergeant Steve Marston, then
there is the pre-season rugby training with Captain Hendy
' propped' up by Corporal Bob Harvey. It really is great dad.
We have also had an inter-platoon volleyball competition which
was won by Headquarters Platoon. Then Lieutenant Redwood
severely handicapped Corporal Alan Bateson in winning the Com-
pany tennis doubles against Sergeant Geoff Parker and Corporal
Bob McDonald.
Finally there was the cricket. 51 OAPs versus the Battalion
team. Corporal Martin Sinclair has just about recovered now,
after receiving a severe blow to the head, lucky we were playing
at BMH Rinteln.
I won't mention the score Mum, except that we came a close
second. But alas Mum we have had to do some work! W02
Ron Moffat ' acquired' a Puma for a day so we have done
some helicopter handling training prior to our Autumn exercise
period.
We have all had a couple of ' crashout' exercises recently.
I was in bed both times Mum, though it did not take long for us
to get ready. Only the Recce Party left camp, which meant we
were late for breakfast again (can you have a word with the OC
about that please Mum). Private Dusty Miller was last seen
wandering around a German wood sticking antennae on trees
to try and get communications with camp. You know it actually
worked Dad (not like in your day) so we were not too late in
getting back.
We are looking forward to the Staff Band coming to play
here Dad, but then we have exercises and Regimental Train-
ing Mum, still the weather is a little cooler now. Your loving
son, as ever, Eddie.

SEPTEMBER saw the Company preparing for the Tenth
Anniversary Celebrations of the opening of the Corps Am-
munition Depot Pombsen. These took the form of a concert in
the Stadthalle Nieheim to which many military and civilian
dignatories were invited. The concert was performed by the
Corps Band under the more than able direction of Captain
Rodney Parker. Through the medium of THE GAZETTE, we
would like to extend our thanks to the band as a whole for
ensuring the total success of the concert. The local news-
papers are full of, and the local inhabitants talk of nothing
but, 'EINEM GROSSEN GEDENKKONZERT and DAS
WUNDERBARE GEDENKKONZERT.' They obviously would
like a repeat performance. The main object of the evening was

to raise funds for the local Handicapped Childrens Home,- Leben-
shilfe E.V. Nieheim—Eversen which the Company has now
formally adopted as its main charity—we are therefore pleased
to report that the sum of DM1,500 was raised and subsequently
presented to Herr Hans Joachim Gawlick the coordinator. The
concert was followed by an all ranks dance, aimed at thanking
Company personnel for all their efforts in connection with the
concert. This was also a success and we are not quite sure who
was the star of the evening, Hugh Lennon, the famous hypnotist
or such worthies as Private Gordon Lindsay our now fully
qualified Martian Interpreter, Corporal Dave Noden or Staff
Sergeant Roy Whitford. Needless to say, Hugh's attempt to
hypnotise Major Terry Rapple failed but he did enjoy ten
minutes of uninterrupted sleep!
Congratulations are in order this month for Corporal Noden
(REME), Lance Corporals Gibson, Bebbington and Downey on
promotion to ranks shown and to Sergeant Ginge Carrahar on
his marriage to Anne, Corporal Ian Akeroyd to Susan, Lance
Corporal Mick Czapski to Alison, Lance Corporal Kevin Craffey
to Julie and finally, last but not least, Private Taff Davis to
Heather.
To our new arrivals, Privates Floyd, Davis and
Forrester we say hello and bid a fond farewell or sigh of
relief (you can guess who is writing the note!) to Sergeant Paul
Frost off to the Falklands, Private Donny Munro to Bicester and
the new Lance Corporal Bebs Bebbington cross posted to 53
Ordnance Company.

WELCOME to Lance Corporals Smith and McCourt, Private
Connor, Sergeants Wood and Aldridge also Corporal Norrie.
We say bon voyage to: Corporal Armitage, Sergeant Attvvood
on promotion, Private Scott 979, Corporal Goddard, Lance
Corporal Boden and Corporal Burn.
The only major sporting event that took place was a return
friendly cricket match, 53 Company v 51 Company. 51 reckoned
they could reverse the result (a defeat earlier in the year) but
were sadly disappointed being soundly thrashed by a fine 53 side
led by Corporal Halliwell. The match saw some fine bowling
from Private Pentland and batting from Corporal Kidd. The
Battalion Golf Competition was made possible by the fine efforts
of Private Gill who provided the beers and marked the Ad-
jutants card on the afternoon round. Corporal Storey won
the competition for the second year running with Captain Noutch
runner-up. A week later he won a major prize in the 4 Armoured
Division Autumn meeting. It is also worth mentioning that
Corporals Storey and Whitley both represented the Corps in a
recent match against the RCT. Apparently there is a rumour
that the Depot is to become a driving range for the Battalion
golfers.

COMPANY-
ON the night of the 16th September the Company was on parade
in the Unit Club to do justice to the place; well justice was done
and according to all the headaches the next morning—justice was
also done to bar stocks.
At the moment there are two members of the MT in the
UK on course, both at Leconsfield. Corporal Rogers attending
the MT Sergeants Course and Lance Corporal Bancroft attend-
ing the B2 to Bl Drivers Upgrading Course. Best of luck to
both of them.
Congratulations are in order to Lance Corporals Smiles,
Montrose and Private Morgan, who were part of the team who
took first place in the Cambrian Marches. Well done lads.
Also on the congratulation scene is Staff Sergeant Gray who
within two months got his Sub Rank (Sergeant) Acting Staff
Sergeant and passed all subjects on his recent EPC(A) Exam.
Well done Staff.
Two members of the PC and A staff decided to go to Spain
and after a night on the Sangria they woke up DM500 and a
wrist watch lighter, but apart from that they enjoyed the trip!
Five members of the Company, Second Lieutenant Smith,
Staff Sergeant Gray, Corporal McDonald, Privates Brooks and
Wilkes took advantage of a British Outward Bound Centre
special expedition in Norway. They were accompanied by
Sergeant Walters from D Med who acted as the medic. They
spent ten days hill walking (although it seemed like ' mountain'
walking) over Norway's beautiful though desolate country.
Despite the consistent rain a good time was had by all, especially
whilst in the company of the local Norwegians who were excep-
tionally friendly. It was a thoroughly worthwhile exercise and the
special expedition facility at BOBC Norway is recommended.
Lance Corporal Hewson has left the Company on detach-
ment to Belize and we wish him all the best.
