A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM
THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF ORDNANCE SERVICES
As Christmas and the end of the year approach, and before we face whatever challenges 1984
may bring, it is perhaps an appropriate time to take stock of how RAOC fared in 1983. On
the whole, it has been a quieter period of consolidation following the dramatic events in the
South Atlantic the previous year. Without doubt the major event was the tragic fire in COD
Donnington, which, apart from resulting in a £165 million loss, will have many repercussions
on our future storage policy. On the brighter side RAOC was again honoured with the
freedom of a local community—this time Dulmen in West Germany.
The Corps has continued to grow in stature and to maintain our reputation for commitment
and achievement in all that we do, be it work, sport or our contribution to the local garrison
community. This is due not only to your professional skill, dedication and sense of purpose,
but also to the tremendous spirit both at work and home. Job satisfaction and a happy
family life are a powerful combination, and I am grateful to you all for your part in our
continuing success.
Christmas is a traditional time for families to gather, renew strength and share all the
joys of the festive season,, but we should remember that some families will be separated
because of emergency tours in Northern Ireland, Belize and the South Atlantic. Our
thoughts will be with them especially at this time.
My wife and I send to all serving and retired members of the RAOC and their families
and to all civilian staff our warmest greetings and we wish you all a very happy Christmas
and a prosperous New Year.
BILL WHALLEY,
us
Major General.
