to see the sights? Judging by the state of some who returned, it was anything but a holiday. The Hohne Ten came the following weekend, which proved to be quite easy in comparison. Finally, farewell and good luck to Lance Corporal Hatfield on his Commando Course and welcome to Lance Corporal Jones. 3 Ordnance Battalion WE start this months notes with con- gratulations to Corporal Mark Lawrance on finally passing his driving test. At last the DOWO WOl Danny Kelly can call on his clerk to do the driving. On the sporting scene Lance Corporal Mac O'Keefe continues to whip our six-a- . side soccer team into shape. Star of the side being our goalie, Staff Sergeant John Pascoe. Commiserations to the sailing team who were un- ceremoniously knocked out in the first round of the BAOR Inter Unit Championships held on the local Mohnesee. Reason for defeat given by the Headquarters element of the team was ' light winds have little effect against heavy limbs.' Time gentle- men to go on a diet! Our Long Looker W02 Ian Burns has made a swift recovery after his unfortunate accident in Norway and has continued his gallavanting by accompanying the DOWO on the recent DOWO/ BOWO conference in Berlin. Welcome also to his wife Sue who has recently arrived from Australia to stay with her husband for a few weeks. No doubt the highlight of the month was the Battalion nuclear debate held at Miinster. Our Adjutant fought a brave battle trying to convince the majority attending, that the ' nuclear deterrent' was obsolete. He tried hard but in the end could not convince the majority. Better luck next year perhaps. A 31 ORDNANCE COMPANY THE highlight of the month was undoubtedly our deployment on Exercise Canal Turn the second of the COs Testex. The Exercise included a visit by Major General Walker, who as well as seeing the unit in the field for the second time also had the opportunity to process out first demand through the COFFER Computer System. During the course of the Exercise we lost comms between the CP and Fire Trench 2, could it have been because of the tightness of the knot which Private ' Sparks ' Wyatt tied when joining two pieces of Don ten together? Heard on an OC's ' O ' Group Unless the enemy have a six figure Grid reference they won't find us Bang alright who talked? The CSM, W02 Thayre in conjunction with the unit training team, Sergeant' Scott' Irvine, Corporals Paul Willis and ' Hutch ' Hutchinson ran a successful RPC3 to 2 Upgrading Course and our congratulations go to Private Speed who was Best Student. Our congratulations go to Private Jeff and Mrs Linda Jones on the birth of their son Andrew. Congratulations are also in order for Corporal ' Tarn' Webster and Private John Coward on passing their MT Accounts Course. We welcome to the fold Sergeant Dick Legg from FOD Dulmen, Privates McCormack and Crayden from the Depot and welcome back from the Falklands Privates Mac McClusky and Paul Calder. We sadly say farewell to Sergeant Pat Gardiner and family and Private (now Lance Corporal) Doug Cowie and family. Finally it's goodbye from me for the time being and to Privates Ebert and Clarkson to the Falklands. 33 ORDNANCE COMPANY EXERCISE CANAL TURN, the Commanding Officers' last major exercise of the year, provided the new OC and 2IC with an excellent opportunity to see how the Company coped in the field. Although there is still a lot to learn, and improve on, it was obvious to all that this ' testex' was a definite improve- men on the last one. The only real ' weakness' within the Company to emerge from the exercise was in our ability, or rather inability, to conduct a successful helibome assault. Our assault, on the last day of the exercise, no doubt afforded the DS a considerable amount of amusement when we, in a superb example of overkill, ' tookout' a wooded hill top occupied by a triangular pillar! Finally, if 2 Section are out there Oast seen in the fight through) we have reorganised and are now back in barracks! Corporal Mynes and Lance Corporal Parker are now the unit 'flora and fauna' experts, having just returned from the Vehicle Camouflage Course. Our congratulations go to Corporal The Conquering Heroes of 33 Ordnance Company. Payne for successfully completing his Driving Instructors Course; now all that has to be done is to transfer him from the CQMS Stores to the MT! Our photographic developers have at last caught up with the script writer! Our regular readers will recall from last month, that some members of the Company recently travelled to Norway for a spot of mountain walking. Well, just to prove that they were not sunning themselves all the time, the accompany- ing photograph shows them astride one of the unconquered peaks. (They were cinvinced that it was unconquered mainly because they did not meet a soul up there!). Pull the other one lads. STORES SECTION 2 FIELD REGIMENT WORKSHOP WE have had to say a fond farewell to WOl Jim McGowan on his retirement. We all wish you and Jeanie all the best and hope that you keep yourself as busy in retirement as you did here. Also departed is Private Scottie Scott to civilian life, we welcome his replacement Private Gary Tippen from the Depot. We also welcome our new boss WOl Ken Norgate. We hope that you and your wife and family have a pleasant stay in Munster. Congratulations must go to Lance Corporal Cunningham on passing his RPC1 and we wish him luck on his current under- taking, an MT1 course at the Depot. Mention must go to Corporal Ginge Evans who after buying and fitting black perspex headlight covers for his new Ford Capri, proclaimed that he had to drive on main beam or take the covers off!—at night of course. And finally, we welcome back to the fold Privates Ivan McHugh and Bernie Lyons from a ten week tour of Northern Ireland guarding the Maze Prison. We hope that the number of departures from that place reduce now you've arrived back in Munster. STORES PLATOON 6 ARMOURED WORKSHOP SINCE our last mention, an important event was the posting of W02 Ted Curtis, his farewell was an eventful evening of tenpin bowling during which Ted showed why he won the Mun- ster Garrison cup for the Workshop. We wish him well in his new job and hope that he and Helen settle into their new home. The new man in the hot seat is W 2 Don Pearson fresh from Belize. Congratulations must go to Private Speed for being top student on his RPC 3—2 course, well done. On a recent working exercise both sections of the platoon were on exercise for the first time together. Soest Det under Lieutenant John Bednall certainly made themselves comfortable, those liquid compo rations probably helped. Welcome to all new arrivals and good luck to those leaving for the Falklands and Belize. Don't worry Private Slight, over in the South Atlantic, we haven't forgotten you, you owe the platoon fund four months of contributions. SPORTING PERSONALITY HAS your unit got a sporting personality, if so, why not send in a black and white photograph and a short write up for our sports page? |
