I • Wagoner 322 fames Hardbatdc Hodgson born 22ndjanuary 1896 at Lund. He enlisted in the Wagoners Reserve on 18th July 1913 at Driffield and was working as a farm hand at Arras Farm, Market Weighton when called for mobilization, servingfirst with the A.S.C. as a driver and seeing action at Mons, he was later transferred to the East Yorkshire Regiment as a front line driver. Whilst with the East Yorks he took part in much of the fighting including trench raids. James Hodgson also had a brother in the Wagoners (see page 15), Wagoner 411 Joseph Hodgson who was made P.O.W. b;y the Germans later in the war. Sadly James Hodgson died on 6th March this year,aged92. Wagoner 322 J. H. Hodgson (left) seen standing in front of the Wagoners' Memorial, Sledmere 1985. He is withhis brother-in-law, Wagoner 1030 William Thompson, M.M. (right). Billy Thompson was born 16th September 1893 at Middleton the son of the village Blacksmith enlisted in the Reserve 2 7th June 1914 at Driffield. He won his Military Medal for bravery und fire whilst working as a stretcher bearer bringing in wounded during the Somme battles of Augu September 1918. Billy is one of the few surviving members of the Wagoners, stillyoungatheart although in his nineties. |
