D DAY SUPPLIES
It was at the end of April , 1943 , that the American con tingent arrived at Hilsea . to take their important part in servicing the American troops in the area and in supplying the D - Day invasion army .
They took over the R.E.M.E. workshops and shipped thou sands of tons of war supplies . Some 10,000 men saw service at the Depot and invariably they considered it one of the happiest stations in the United Kingdom .
Majors Macfarlane and Mack were both junior officers in their respective services when the R.A.O.C. moved out and the Americans moved in just ! over two years ago . Yesterday ! they were officers in command . The work of Major Mack at G65 had been recognized by the award of the Bronze Star . COMMANDERS ' CARAVANS
One interesting feature of the work at the Depot was the building of caravans such as used by Field - Marshal Mont gomery . The model and design was by Mr. Farley , one of the old civilian employees , who received a complimentary letter from the Field - Marshal .
The Americans at Hilsea are now being dispersed to various camps in this country . Some
are due for early embarkation to their homeland , sed maybe many will be later taking part in the Far East war .
TRAINING DEPOT
Hilsea will once again be come the Training Depot of the R.A.O.C. , and will resume something of its pre - war
character .
The colours bearing party were : S.T. Serg . Louis
The officers present at the farewell ceremony were Major Macfarlane and Capt . W. A.
