RD 11 X 1933 G Hilsea Lines Social and Sports Club . SHO HOOTING . The team has achieved remarkable success this year , its first season , in Division I of the Portsmouth and District Rifle League . The teams in this division of the league are undoubtedly represented by me of the finest indoor marksmen in the country and while our own does not stand high in the table , its performances in the latter part of the season show that no team in the district can at present be regarded as its superior . A bad start early in the season , when some good members were not available , spoiled all chances of competing for leadership in the division , but the team has concentrated on a more coveted trophy , the " Lord Lee " Cup . We received a bye in the first round of this competition and in the second round defeated " H.M.S. Excellent " with the average of 96-7 , the scores being 774 v . 768 , and in the Portsmouth semi final versus Fareham we won by a margin of 9 points with the aggregate of 776. The local final was staged at the Gas Works range , when the team showed splendid form in beating the Royal Marines with the following scores : -- Mr . E. Jones , 100 ; Mr. G. Taylor , 100 ; Mr. S. Tuck , 98 ; Cpl . L. Sankey , 98 ; Armr . S. Sgt . G. Harley , 98 ; Sub - Condr . W. Deacon , 97 ; Armr . S.M. G. Erskine , 96 ; and Pte . E. Layzell , 96. The aggregate of 783 was eleven points ahead of the Marines . As victors of the Portsmouth District , our team is to meet the Southampton District winners , Survey Battalion , R.E. , in the decisive round for the " Lord Lee " Cup , at the Southern Railway range , Portsmouth , on March 24th . Further honours have fallen to the club in the selection of Mr. G. Taylor and Cpl . Sankey as local representatives in the Cities and Boroughs Match and Hants Inter - Town Match , S. Sgt . Harley being also a representative in the latter . In Club shoots the spoon winners ( best of 4 shoots , H.P. 400 ) each month were as follows : -October and November , S. Sgt . Harley , 397 and 398 respectively ; December , Sub - Condr . Deacon , 397 ; January , S.M. Erskine , 399 . A. F. M. RAO 273 7.3.33 |
