HI A A bugler sounds Retreat outside the sergeants ' mess at Hilsea Barracks in the early 1930's . To use modern parlance , The News , is on a nostalgia kick . My family at Purbrook kindly sends me all relevant cuttings which gives me great pleasure . I returned home for the first time after an absence of 30 years , in 1979. After five years service in the New Zealand Army , I travelled as a construction engineer throughout Australia , New Zealand , South Africa , Singapore and the South Pacific islands . It was dismaying to find that the Ordnance Depot and Hilsea Barracks had been obliterated by a housing development , but was pleased to observe that the north gate and sergeants ' mess still survived , also the main gates and parts of the wall , and the old riding school ( or drill shed ) . I enlisted as an armourer at Hilsea in May 1934 , and served until August 1949 and I hope that the above photo will stir the memories of my old Ordnance wallahs still surviving ( I am now 62 ) .- L .
