EX SUSTAINER CHALLENGE
BY WO2 ( SQMS ) STOCKS ACC 16 BN RAOC
1. Ex SUSTAINER CHALLENGE took place between 22-26 July 1992 at " Adventure International " , Bude , Cornwall . The idea of the Ex was to involve members of the Catering Department in numerous adventurous training pursuits without the burden of any catering or military duties .
2. Seven chefs departed from Bicester in the PRI mini - bus for the 4 hour drive to cornwall . On arrival we were met by .the Senior Instructor from " Adventure International " who explained the running of the centre , meal timings and worked out our activity programme for the next four days .
3. Day one started with a 3 mile run and short swim before breakfast , followed by our first activity " windsurfing " or for most of us more swimming with a board , but after the two hour session we had all managed to master the art even though we could only go in one direction . Lunch was followed by a 3 mile brisk walk to our next activity , abseiling and rock climbing . Once briefed on the does and dont's the first pair down the 180 ft cliff were Cpl Pete Bennison and Pte Jason ( Mac ) McCluskey whose rapid descent prompted the instructors to question our denial of ever having completed this event before . Whilst they climbed back up an opposite rock face the remaining five took their turn although LCpl Karen Ireland ( a virgin at the event ) took a bit of persuading .
4. After a quiet night out at a classical music recital ( alright then disco ) . Day two started again with the fun run and dip . The morning's activity was to be Kyak canoeing an event that despite all the Instructors efforts in setting difficult tasks and manoevouvrs proved to be an enjoyable and dry experience for all , except for Pte Michelle Jones , who's canoe bridge walking faltered at the start so she decided to swim instead .
5. The afternoon activity was Malibu surfing on one of Britain's best known surfing beaches . After donning wet suits and " Boarding Up " we went into the surf with some hilarious results , made possible by strong currents and LCpl Dave Well's inability to miss the odd swimmer or 15. Another quiet night was spent out at the local disco with everybody so amazed at the dancing skills of Pte Cath Price , they all cleared the floor when she got up even when she was just going to the bar , ( which wasn't very often ) .
6. Day three meant a bus ride out to Tamar Lake about 8 miles NE of Bude . The whole day was spent there sailing and windsurfing . The sailing took place in both single crew toppers and six crew lasers , both thoroughly enjoyable but the former bringing the most laughs and triumphs . The " windsurfing " took on a different dimension from the first days efforts on the canal , the wind was stronger and the area of water was huge . Although the day has long and exhausting with about six hours spent on or in the water everybody was thrilled at their achievements .
7. Yes ! you've guessed another quiet night out but this time in a different " night club " . The other revellers were still impressed with Pte Price's dancing , but managed to get the odd step or two in around the edge of the larger dance floor . Cpl Pte Bennison seemed a bit weary from the days events ( or previous quiet nights ) but in the end still managed to relive his childhood when " Madness " was played , ably assisted by Pte Mac and LCp1 Dave , Pte Cath ensuring they had enough room to strutt their stuff .
8. The final day was taken up with indoor games and a mammoth surfing session by popular demand . This proved to be a real posing session with 50 or so Swedish and Italian student novices watching in admiration at us pro's " hanging ten ' and knocking over 5 in the process .
9. The journey back was very subdued with the sounds of the top ' 40 ' being battered to submission by the snoring quintet in the back of the bus .
10. On reflection this was an invaluable experience which made the previous months of hard work and never ending functions fade in the distance .
11. The exercise can hopefully be repeated next year taking some of the chefs that were left behind to work .
