brings love
to a
desert warrior
By TRACEY HARRISON
TWO pen pals brought together by the Daily Mail's intensive coverage of the Gulf War are to marry , M
Secretary Sally Lands read ' every word ' of the paper's frontline reports and in - depth analysis and was determined to do her bit to help Britain's troops .
She joined a pen pal scheme and picked out the name of Lance Corporal Steven Lock , and they exchanged numerous letters and photographs .
Sally's cheerful , well - informed letters proved a great inspiration and comfort to Steven , serving in the desert with the 6th Ordnance Battalion .
When he came home after the Allied victory , love quickly blossomed .
Memento
One of the first things Sally did was give him all the back copies of the Mail covering the war .
Sally , 25 , from Westcliffe - on - Sea , Essex , said : ' It was that which brought us together , because through the newspaper reports I felt increasingly involved in events out there , and that inspired me to write to Steve . '
Steven , also 25 and now based at Bicester , Oxfordshire , said : ' What struck me about Sally was that she took a real interest in what I was doing and obviously cared so much . ' She was able to tell me more about the war than I could ever find out in the desert !
I was also delighted that she had kept all the
Daily Mails covering the war . It's a great memento for me . '
The couple are now looking forward to their wedding in May , when Sally , who works for a firm of City solicitors , will move to join Steven at his base .
