BARNLESS OWLS - NEED BICESTER BOXES !
Six nesting boxes for Barn Owls have been constructed by two civilian carpenters of 3 Sub Depot , Central Ordnance Depot , Bicester . The boxes were constructed of reclaimed wood under the guidance of Peter Burman and Marek Nowakowski who are part of a scientitic project to breed and release Barn Owls .
The support of the project goes back to 1989 when the then Commanding Officer of 16 Battalion Royal Army Ordnance Corps , Lieutenant Colonel Gary Hawthorne , was approached with a view to releasing three unrelated pairs of owls onto MOD land . These prime sites resulted in two out of three pairs breeding , but another problem loomed and that was of providing suitable roosting and nesting areas .
The current Commanding Officer , Lieutenant Colonel Gordon Geddie was able to help again and said " I am ever conscious of the needs for conservation projects and I am happy to use our resources to that end "
The scientific project , currently running at 80 % success rate , ( against a . national success rate of 20 % ) is praiseworthy of the help and support of the military for the continued success of the project and the production of the nesting boxes which will be placed in secret locations on the Depot lands .
Press Facility
Those involved with the project , including the project founders , will be available for interview and a photographic facility at Bicester on Tuesday 2 June 1992 at 2 0'clock .
Editors wishing to send representatives to this facility should contact Captain Jackie Gavin on 0869 257737 for further details .
